How did you come to work at On Lok: I have a passion for working with seniors and helping others. I have been a dedicated caregiver for seniors for over 20 yrs. A friend, whose mother is a participant, referred me to On Lok. I decided to work here as a Caregiver because I really enjoy the model of care and quality of service the seniors receive.

What do you like most about your job: I love motivating our seniors to engage in the activities provided. I love to see them smile and engage them to their full potential while having fun at the same time. Providing care for our seniors and seeing them thrive is what makes my day.

Please share a little about you:

I like: gardening, singing, dancing, cooking and helping others.

I know: how to make others laugh and have a great time.

I could not do without: my family and my dog Quincy.

In my free time: I enjoy shopping, swimming, relaxing at the park with my dog Quincy and going to the beach.

My superpower is: my cooking. I put as much love into it as I put into the care I provide for our seniors.

Introducing The Enrollment Intake Team

By: Helen Huckleberry, Marketing Director

Please meet the Enrollment Intake team for On Lok PACE.

Our Enrollment Intake Team is a remarkable group of staff who typically serve as the first point of contact for those calling us about On Lok PACE. After listening carefully to the participant, family member or referral, if it seems like a match is made between the senior’s needs and our program, the Enrollment Intake team connects them to our Enrollment Representatives.

What makes our Enrollment Intake Team so special:
  • We Listen Closely by engaging directly with seniors, families, and referral sources to understand individual needs and assess whether On Lok PACE might be a good fit. Our goal is to ensure they feel informed, not overwhelmed. We do our best to direct them to other resources if PACE is not a good fit.

  • We Pre-Screen for Eligibility by reviewing essential criteria such as age, zip code, and insurance status to determine potential eligibility for On Lok PACE.

  • We Balance Efficiency with Empathy by realizing each interaction is an opportunity to build trust and gather valuable information which helps our Enrollment Representatives have more informed, focused, and meaningful conversations.

Learn more about our fabulous trio of Enrollment Intake Team members, how they came to On Lok, what they love about working here, and how they spend their free time.

Meet Winnie Xie Winnie joined On Lok in 2023 after taking time off to care for her grandparents in China. That experience opened her eyes to the unique needs of older adults and inspired her to pursue work supporting seniors. She finds joy in hearing the excitement of participants and families discovering On Lok PACE — especially when new callers say they were referred by someone who just can’t stop raving about our programs! In her downtime, Winnie loves running and hiking, and she’s recently taken on the challenge of hiking Mission Peak after work. (That’s a 3-mile climb with a 2,117-foot elevation gain — go Winnie!)

Meet Huy Tran Huy joined us in February 2024 with a personal connection to On Lok: both of his parents are participants and love the program so much that it inspired him to look for a role here. With a background in sales and customer service, Huy is a natural fit for the Enrollment Intake Team.

What Huy loves most about working at On Lok is his team and manager. He appreciates being part of a group where everyone is passionate about the mission and where there’s always an opportunity to learn, grow, and support one another. Huy recently shared how meaningful it is when he’s able to help a family understand what On Lok can offer — knowing firsthand the difference it’s made in his own parents’ lives.

For fun, Huy loves playing pickup basketball games at the gym with friends and hiking local trails, but his all-time favorite hike is Moanalua Valley Middle Ridge Trail to Stairway to Heaven in Oahu, Hawaii. He’s also a fan of the Golden State Warriors and Steph Curry.

Meet Karen Reina Karen came aboard in April 2024, bringing experience from San Francisco Health Plan, where a chance encounter with the On Lok team at Carnaval sparked her interest. Though she didn’t grow up around seniors, her work made her aware of how much support older adults need — and she was moved to be part of that solution. Karen finds deep fulfillment in easing families’ concerns as they navigate care for their loved ones, meeting them with kindness and patience. She loves having the opportunity to share good news to seniors and their caregivers after completing the eligibility pre-screening process for On Lok PACE.

When she’s not at work, you’ll find Karen hanging out with her two German Shepherd mix dogs, year and a half old sisters Leia and Raea, or teaching Sunday school at her church.

On Lok Celebrates

By: Scott Lalonde, Events Manager

Our Most Successful Fundraising Gala Yet!

The On Lok Celebrates annual fundraising gala was recently held at the beautiful San Francisco Design Center—and it was our most successful event to date!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors, donors, community partners, seniors, staff, and volunteers, we raised over $600,000 to support On Lok’s mission.

This year’s gala celebrated Healthy Connections & Vibrant Communities by highlighting the powerful impact activities have on On Lok participants. A new feature this year, the Healthy Connections Showcase, brought that theme to life with inspiring on-stage demonstrations by On Lok participants in some of our most beloved programs, including Body Dynamics, Latin Dance Grooves, and a drum circle.

The evening continued with our marquee fundraising program, featuring an exciting live auction and fund-a-need segment hosted by the dynamic singing auctioneer Ellen Toscano. Taking center stage as part of the program were legendary Chef Martin Yan and On Lok’s Grace Li, Kevin Gerber, and John Blazek, who all played key roles in energizing the crowd and encouraging support for our mission. A highlight of the evening fundraising program was a heartfelt video sharing uplifting testimonials from activity participants and activity leaders.

To view the full list of this year’s gala sponsors and enjoy photos from the event, please visit www.onlok.org/celebrates25.

Save the date! Our 2026 gala will be held on Friday, May 8, once again at the San Francisco Design Center. We hope to see you there! Have a question about our annual fundraising gala? Reach out to events@onlok.org.
