How did you come to work at On Lok: I am a registered dietitian, and I work with On Lok’s Medically Tailored Meals program. I have been working in community nutrition for the past 2 years. I was heard about this job opportunity and applied. I have really been enjoying my time at On Lok.

What do you like most about your job: I love talking about food and nutrition and helping people better understand it. I especially enjoy removing some of the mysteries around nutrition and breaking it down into simple, manageable steps that lead to meaningful changes.

Please share a little about you:

Reflections From Powell Center Social Workers

By: Barnaby Hall, On Lok PACE Powell Center Director

Celebrating On Lok Social Workers with reflections from On Lok PACE Powell Center Social Workers.

Meet the Powell Social Work Team. Top Row — from the left: Fonia Chan, Nu Hong. Bottom Row — from the left: Chau Le, Julie Wong, Lillian Man.

Thank you for all you do On Lok Social Workers!

In honor of Social Work Month, I would like to show my sincere appreciation to the On Lok Social Workers and all the wonderful and necessary work they provide each and every day to our participants and teams. The role of the social worker is not an easy one, for they must navigate being an advocate for participants and providing support in all aspects of life, including but not limited to assessing needs, crisis intervention as well as connecting our seniors to community resources. I want to give a BIG, BIG THANK YOU to my wonderful Powell Social Work Team, Fonia Chan, Nu Hong, Chau Le, Lillian Man and Julie Wong for all their hard work and dedication. Your ongoing support has made a lasting difference in all of our participants and their families lives!

Fonia Chan ( Social Work Lead )
  • It truly feels like a big family here. Having worked here for over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside our participants together with other disciplines, supporting them every step of the way. I feel so grateful to be part of such a kind, compassionate, and passionate social work team. It means so much to share in our participants’ lives – the sunny, rainy, and even stormy days – and to witness their special moments, like welcoming grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and to simply be there with them, all the way through.

Chau Le ( Social Work )
  • I find it fulfilling working with seniors in a long term period. On Lok provides me the space to get to know my clients and co-workers. I truly feel like I'm a part of the team.

Lillian Man ( Social Work )
  • As a social worker, I feel that it's invaluable that I can get work with our participants through a holistic and interdisciplinary approach. I appreciate that we work as a team to find ways to support each participant and their family's unique needs and situation. At Powell, I think we are lucky to have program-related housing which uniquely allows us to utilize housing and healthcare to support participants' whole well-being.

Nu Hong ( Social Work )
  • It is a deeply humbling, meaningful and rewarding experience to learn about and celebrate our participants’ life experiences and resilience while supporting them in navigating the later stages in life with dignity, respect and support that aligns with their values and wishes. Working and growing alongside an interdisciplinary team is invaluable and provides a holistic framework to understand and care our participants unique needs. This work is not at all easy, but immensely important and meaningful. Being part of a social work team, who understands the complexity of the day to day juggling act and supports prioritizing self care makes the work manageable and a world of difference. I am so full of gratitude all around.

Julie Wong ( Social Service Coordinator )
  • I am very happy to have the opportunity to work with a team of highly skilled and dedicated healthcare professionals. Every morning, when I step to the DHC, the seniors smile to me and say good morning, I am very happy. Although, some of the seniors will ask me to do somethings that are not our duty, I do my best to find another staff to help them. I love to make them happy.

Discover the Power of Nutrition

By: Kristin Rose, On Lok Registered Dietician

Inspiration for healthy nutrition habits!

March is National Nutrition Month and this is a great opportunity to focus on nutrition and health.

Nutritional changes can have a big impact. It is never too late to focus on improving dietary habits.

Here are a few suggestions to inspire healthier habits:
  • Focus on eating the RAINBOW throughout the week. Different colors provide different phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals that support health. The more variety you include, the greater the potential benefits for your body.

  • Replace sugary drinks with infused water. Sugary beverages add excess calories and don’t provide much hydration. Try flavoring water with fruits (such as watermelon, cucumber, citrus, basil, rosemary) for a refreshing, flavorful alternative.

  • Don’t skip breakfast. Starting your day with breakfast sets you up for success. Focus on meals that include protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep your energy steady and reduce mid-morning sugar crashes and unnecessary snacking.

  • Focus on hydrating. Carrying a refillable water bottle is a helpful reminder to drink water throughout the day. Proper hydration supports digestion, improves gut health, and helps control appetite. Hydration can also come from foods-many fruits and vegetables such as berries, bell peppers, celery, watermelon, and pineapple have high water content.

  • Increase your fiber intake. Fiber is essential for gut health and plays a role in heart health by lowering cholesterol levels. Try making small swaps like choosing whole wheat bread for white bread or adding a vegetable or fruit to every meal. Increase fiber gradually and remember to drink plenty of water to avoid stomach discomfort.

  • Try practicing mindful eating. Mindful eating encourages you to slow down and be present during meals. Take time to chew thoroughly, notice the flavors and texture of your food, and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness signals. This practice can also make eating a more joyful experience.

Small, sustainable changes over time can help lead to a healthier lifestyle.
