From Gala to Carnaval

The On Lok Celebrates Gala returned to the San Francisco Design Center on Friday, May 8th, and On Lok 30th Street Senior Center participants stole the show with Tai Chi and Latin Dance Grooves performances.

Gala attendees were treated to two amazing performances by our dedicated 30th Street Senior Center participants, showcasing their talent, teamwork, and vibrant energy.

The Unique Tai Chi Fan Routine

A determined group of Tai Chi participants spent 8 weeks learning and memorizing a new, unique fan routine with a new instructor. This was challenging and exciting, as many had never used a fan in their practice or performed on stage before! Determined to give it their all, many seniors took the initiative to attend extra independent practices. Their remarkable courage, dedication, and pride truly shone through on stage.

The Carnaval Dance Team

Once again, our incredible Carnaval dance team was invited back to perform. These active participants are a vital part of the first-place award-winning Latin Dance Grooves Carnaval contingent, and their passion and commitment continue to inspire us.

Cheer On Our Participants at Carnaval!

The celebration doesn't stop at the Gala. For the fourth consecutive year, these active participants from the 30th Street Senior Center are joining the Latin Dance Grooves (LDG) Carnaval Contingent for the 2026 Carnaval San Francisco Grand Parade this Sunday, May 24th!

This year's Latin Dance Grooves' theme, From Many We Are One: A Radiant Celebration of CommUNITY, this intergenerational group—featuring both our elders and neighborhood children—proves that strength emerges from diversity.

Expect bright colors, joyful energy, and intricate footwork featuring Brazilian Samba, Cuban Salsa, and Cha cha cha. Their performance mirrors the beautiful game of fútbol while promoting the rich contributions of Latin culture. As the Latin Dance Grooves team notes, this performance is a "living expression of unity, resilience, and hope," encouraging everyone to "fill their cups" with joy and gratitude.
