As many On Lok staff commute by public transportation, walk between sites, or work in the community, personal safety awareness is essential. Many incidents occur due to opportunity, and small habits can make a big difference in preventing theft or unsafe situations.

Everyday Safety Tips

• Stay alert and aware of your surroundings; limit headphone and phone use when walking or waiting alone

• Use shuttle or escort services when available and travel in groups when possible

• Stick to well-lit, populated areas and trust your instincts

• Keep valuables secured and out of sight; carry bags in front on public transit

• Keep keys accessible when approaching your car

• Report suspicious activity to Security at (415) 292-8887

• Do not prop doors open and prevent tailgating into secured areas

Workplace & Community Safety

• Know exits, evacuation routes, and emergency response tools (panic buttons, duress alarms)

• Maintain personal space and use calm, respectful communication

• Set clear boundaries and remove yourself if a situation escalates

• When working off-site, share your itinerary, assess surroundings, and check in with your team

• Schedule visits during daylight hours when possible and park in well-lit areas
